**Short answer:** a cleansing milk is a creamy, low-foam cleanser that removes dirt and makeup without stripping oil, so it suits dry, normal and sensitive skin and Pakistan's dry winter months. A foaming face wash uses stronger surfactants that lift more oil, so it suits oily and acne-prone skin, especially in humid summers. Many people use both: milk at night to remove sunscreen and makeup, and a foaming or gel wash when skin feels greasy.

## Cleansing milk vs face wash at a glance

| | Cleansing milk | Foaming face wash |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Texture | Creamy lotion, little or no foam | Gel or cream that lathers |
| How it cleans | Oils and mild cleansers dissolve dirt and makeup | Surfactants lift oil and dirt into foam |
| Skin feel after | Soft, comfortable | Fresh, very clean; can feel tight |
| Best for | Dry, normal, sensitive, mature skin | Oily, combination, acne-prone skin |
| Season in Pakistan | Winter, smog season, air-conditioned offices | Hot, humid summer and monsoon |
| Removes sunscreen and makeup | Well, especially as a first cleanse | Light makeup; heavy makeup needs a first cleanse |
| How to rinse | Rinse with water or wipe off with a soft cloth | Rinse with water |

## What is a cleansing milk?

A cleansing milk is an emulsion: water and oils blended with gentle cleansing agents into a lotion. You massage it onto dry or damp skin, where the oils loosen makeup, sunscreen and grime, then rinse or wipe it away. Because it relies less on foaming surfactants, it removes dirt without taking all of your skin's own oils with it. That's why it feels soft rather than squeaky afterwards.

Some cleansing milks also carry skincare ingredients. Purelita's [Cleansing Milk Face Wash](https://purelita.com/product/cleansing-milk-face-wash/), for example, includes glutathione, vitamin C and niacinamide for skin that feels clean and soft and looks fresh. It also contains a little glycolic acid, so patch-test it first if your skin is sensitive.

## What is a foaming face wash?

A foaming face wash uses surfactants that bubble up and wrap around oil, so water can carry it away. That's very effective on oily skin and after sweating, but strong formulas can over-clean, leaving skin tight, red or, ironically, oilier as it tries to compensate. Gentle, pH-balanced foaming washes avoid most of this.

Acne-focused washes often add salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These are treatment cleansers: useful for breakouts, but often too drying for every day on dry or sensitive skin.

## Which should you use? By skin type

| Your skin | Morning | Night |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dry or sensitive | Rinse with water or a little cleansing milk | Cleansing milk |
| Normal | Cleansing milk or a gentle gel wash | Cleansing milk, plus a gentle wash if you wore heavy makeup |
| Combination | Gentle gel wash | Cleansing milk first, then a gentle wash on oily areas |
| Oily or acne-prone | Gentle foaming or salicylic wash | Cleansing milk to remove sunscreen, then your foaming wash (a double cleanse) |

## Can you use cleansing milk and face wash together?

Yes. That's the idea behind [double cleansing](https://purelita.com/blog/how-to/double-cleansing-explained/): the milk dissolves sunscreen, makeup and pollution, then a gentle face wash clears what's left. It's most useful at night, after a long day outdoors in city dust or when you've worn waterproof makeup. In the morning, one cleanse is enough.

## How to use a cleansing milk properly

1. **Start with dry hands and a dry or slightly damp face.**
2. **Massage a coin-sized amount** over your face for 30–60 seconds, including around the nose and hairline.
3. **Remove it** with lukewarm water, or with a soft, damp cloth if you prefer.
4. **Follow with your routine:** toner, serum, moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen.

Avoid hot water. It strips oil faster than any cleanser and leaves skin dry, especially in winter.

## Cleansing milk in Pakistan's seasons

- **Summer and monsoon:** oily skin may prefer a foaming wash in the morning; keep cleansing milk for removing sunscreen at night.
- **Winter:** most skin types do better with cleansing milk morning and night, when cold air and heaters dry skin out (see our [winter routine](https://purelita.com/blog/routine/winter-skincare-routine-pakistan/)).
- **Smog season:** a two-step cleanse at night helps remove pollution particles (see [smog-season skincare](https://purelita.com/blog/tips/smog-season-skincare-pakistan/)).

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Is cleansing milk better than face wash?**

Neither is better for everyone. Cleansing milk is gentler and suits dry or sensitive skin; a foaming face wash cleans oil more strongly and suits oily or acne-prone skin.

**Can I use cleansing milk every day?**

Yes. It's gentle enough for daily use, morning and night.

**Is cleansing milk good for oily skin?**

As a first cleanse at night, yes. On its own it may not feel clean enough for very oily skin in summer, so follow it with a gentle foaming wash.

**Do you need to rinse off cleansing milk?**

Rinse or wipe it off. Leaving it on can feel heavy and trap dirt it has loosened.

**Does cleansing milk remove makeup?**

Yes, it removes everyday makeup and sunscreen well. For heavy or waterproof makeup, massage for longer or follow with a second cleanse.

**Is cleansing milk good for acne-prone skin?**

It can be, as a gentle first step that doesn't strip the skin. Pair it with an acne-friendly wash or treatment, and use [pimple patches](https://purelita.com/product/hydrocolloid-acne-patches/) on individual spots.
